How to Trade Stocks

Learning how to trade stocks is not an easy task nor is it one that should be taken lightly. It takes a lot of hard work and determination in order to be successful investing in stocks. In today’s article we discuss ways to buy, sell and short sell stocks as part of your trading plan.

As you learn how to trade stocks, you will find that a “buy” is an order to buy a certain number of shares. You can either buy these shares at a certain maximum price, or you can buy the shares at the best price that you can get at the time you actually enter the order. If you buy shares at a certain maximum price then you are placing a limit order. If you buy shares at the best price that you can get at the time you actually enter the order then you are placing a market order. As you learn how to trade stocks you will find that limit orders have a pre-set expiration date and if they are not filled then the order stays open until it expires. You will also find that the limit order may not actually be processed if there is not a willing seller to sell at the price that you specified.

Stock trading requires understanding what a “sell” is. Just as you would place a limit order or a market order when buying stocks, you also do this when selling stocks. So, in order to sell the shares that you own, you would either sell the shares at a certain minimum price (limit order) or you sell the shares at a certain current market price (market order).

As you learn how to trade stocks you may also learn about short selling. Short selling is one of many trading strategies that help the investor to achieve profits when trading stocks. A short sale occurs when an investor places an order to sell a stock that he or she does not own. You have to set up a margin account so that you can borrow shares from your broker. You borrow these shares with the intent that the price of the stock will drop so that you can then replace the shares you borrowed by buying them back at the lower price. This concept is one that can seem complicated at first, but once understood, many investors find it very useful.
